The book is the first of a series of, I imagine, three or four. It follows four characters, Amber--who is prophesied to be the Queen of the Vampires; Chloe, her best friend, and a witch; Michael, the vampire who has been searching for the queen for centuries, and Marcus, Michael's vampire protege.
The book is very fast paced and some parts are quite moving and vivid.
I liked the book. Parts of it reminded me of Anne Rice, especially when the authors describe events with Marcus and Michael in the distant past. There are short scenes from Belgium, Russia, Hong Kong, Sidon, Lebanon, Rome, and even Ancient Macedonia. The more recent flashbacks, with deal mostly with Amber, who's not a vampire in the beginning, and Chloe, the witch are good, though not as rich.
The modern day plotline revolves around Amber and Chloe learning of her destiny and Michael and Marcus working to bring it to pass. Of course, there are enemies who don't want it. Werewolves play a role in the prophecy, too.
I would have liked the book to be longer, and I imagine the next books will more fully develop the settings and the characters.
I especially like that the books are not apologetic that vampires essentially kill and eat humans. These characters aren't presented as tragic characters.
