Blood The Last Vampire movie is a Japanese animated film that was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo. In the genre of anime, Blood: The Last Vampire, produced by Production I.G and SPE Visual Works who also produced Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was released on November 18, 2000 in Japan.

Since its first screening, the film, which was produced in English unlike most previous Japanese anime productions, has been exceptionally well received, thanks to the popularity of Japanese anime worldwide.

Considered a breakthrough movie that crosses the anime and vampire genres of film, Blood The Last Vampire movie has won dozens of awards and prizes all over the globe.

The movie was noted for its revolutionary application of digital imaging and animation.

American director James Cameron, known for his Academy Award success in animated films including Avatar, stated that “the world will come to consider this work as the standard of top quality in digital animation.”

The plot line of Blood The Last Vampire movie begins in 1966 shortly before the commencement of the Vietnam War, and is set in Yokota Air Base, which is a division of the US Military.

Saya, portrayed by Japanese actress Gianna Jun, is an assassin trained by a secret organization, the Red Shield. She is a young girl who is of high school age, as well as the protagonist in the story. Saya’s main job is to hunt for demons disguised as normal humans.

These demons are actually blood curdling chiropterans who feed off of the blood of humans. These hematophagous creatures resemble large bats in their natural form.

They have superhuman abilities that include the ability to heal from most wounds, as well as superhuman strength and agility. Otherwise they have equal intelligence to humans, but are capable of living for much longer. Chiropterans will only die from a sudden and rapid loss of blood, which means as an assassin, Saya has only one chance to provide the fatal blow to a chiropteran.

The chiropterans have invaded the US military base at Yokota and it is Saya’s job to find them. She poses as a school girl in order to gain entry to the neighboring high school. The story continues as Saya encounters two chiropterans who are posing as school girls. She murders one, much to the school nurse’s dismay, but only injures the other one. The hunt continues with Saya using an especially powerful sword called a katana to kill the chiropterans.

After she has completed her mission, the truth is revealed that Saya is actually a vampire, and that she has been in existence since 1892. Now she is the only vampire left on earth, even though it is understood that she is most likely a hybrid, breed of human and vampire. For instance, she is not allergic to sunlight as is most other vampires, but she is disturbed by any religious symbolism. She also has superhuman abilities, such as super intense senses and higher levels of intelligence than humans.

In its home country of Japan, the Blood The Last Vampire movie won Grand Prize in animation at the Media Arts Festival from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, as well as the Mainichi Film Competition’s Ofuji Noburo Award.

The World Animation Celebration awarded Blood: The Last Vampire the top prize of Best Theatrical Feature Film, and at the Akasaki Film Festival, the film was awarded Special Prize. In North America, the movie’s release led to more than 100,000 copies sold within the first week in the United States. Blood: The Last Vampire was chosen as the “Public’s Prize Best Asia Feature Film” by the Canadian Montreal Fantasia Film Festival. Blood: The Last Vampire was soon the top selling title in all of Manga Entertainment’s history.

As a result of the Blood: The Last Vampire’s phenomenal success, a sequel in comic book form, Blood: The Last Vampire 2000, was released in 2001, and then Blood: The Last Vampire 2002 in 2002. Also there have been several books and spin off anime series, as well as a video game titled Crackdown that is tied directly to the anime animated Blood: The Last Vampire.

In 2009 there was a live version of the film under the original title of Blood: The Last Vampire that was released in Japan.
