The book that started it all. As the title suggests, this is the life (undeath?) story of a vampire, told to a human with a tape recorder. This book perfectly captures the vampire trend it started, almost as if Anne Rice could see the future. Louis's story is full of the despair that is the essence of the vampire state, yet his human listener only sees the despair at the end and refuses to accept it. Just as people today, he only saw the romantic aspects of being a vampire. A must-read for anyone who considers them self a vampire aficionado. This book also inspired a movie.
