I am a big fan of all vampire movies, admittedly, and even like the children animated cartoons of old and the Count on Sesame Street! But nothing compares with the fear and strange eroticism of Lost Boys. Okay, I was a young teenage girl when it came out but it is still as good to watch now as it was then.
The film begins with the arrival of Jason Patric (as Michael) and his younger sibling (played by Corey Haim) to a strange town, Santa Carla, in California, together with their mum (a new divorcee).
They all moved in with their mum's father who was a really mean and strange guy that likes to kill and stuff animals.
The town has witnessed some really strange events and has a serious gang problem.
Michael meets and falls in love with Star who is living with David (i.e. Kiefer Sutherland) and naively agrees to a motorbike race against David, in an attempt to impress the lovely Star.
It all goes horribly wrong and Michael narrowly avoids serious injury! After their head-to-head face-off David (the victor) asks Michael to come to their place and hang out with the other guys (who are vampires!).
He unwittingly drinks human blood, believing it to be red wine and is turned into a vampire.
Sam, Michael's brother has also made friends, but with two vampire-killing brothers, Edgar (played by Corey Feldman) and Alan (Jamison Newlander).
Together they try to kill some of the sleeping vampires in the gang that Michael has mistakenly joined. Although this first attempt is unsuccessful they re-group the following day with more weapons and, with Michael's help, destroy David and his gang.
This film was full of action and suspense and it show cases Kiefer Sutherland at his very best.
