When the phrase ‘vampire bites’ is used, the most
common image is one
of Count Dracula
feeding on his latest fictional victim. While being bitten by a real
vampire is not exactly a novel idea, even in theory, hollywood vampires
are
no more than a figment of one’s imagination as they do not exist. That
does not stop some people from believing they are indeed vampires seen
on vampire movies, as
they make their mark on unsuspecting victims. Less gruesome is the use
of faux vampire bites that give the impression and mystic of the
mythical creature’s bite. However, vampire bites do not always have to
be in the literal sense. Nowadays one of the websites for teens
interested in vampire lore, such as the Twilight Series of books and
movies, is called Vampire
Bites.
There have been actual reports of people biting victims, stating they needed to drink or feed on their blood. For instance in August 2011 the 19-year-old Texan by the name of Lyle Monroe Bensley was arrested for burglary with the intention of committing assault. Bensley, a self-professed teen vampire who claimed to be 500 years old, told the police that he “needed to feed.” He attempted to feed via vampire bites. Bensley the teenage vampire, wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts, broke into the apartment where the female victim was in her bed. He growled and hissed at the woman as he attacked her, biting and punching her with his fists, according to the police report. After the victim ran away from the attacker, she contacted the Galveston police department who sent officers promptly. They discovered Bensley in the apartment complex. The officer on the scene, Officer Daniel Erickson, stated that “He was begging us to restrain him because he didn't want to kill us...He said he needed to feed.” Bensley stated he was a vampire to the police. After an evaluation by the emergency medical personnel it was documented that he was not under the influence of drugs or mind-altering substances.
Another incident occurred one month later in September 2011, this time in Florida. A 22-year-old female by the name of Josephine Smith attacked 69-year-old Milton Ellis after announcing she was a vampire and stating “I am going to eat you” to the man. According to the police on the scene, Smith bit the elderly man on the face and arm. While typical vampire bites involve puncture wounds in order to feed on the blood of the host, Smith chewed into Ellis’s flesh, ripping away sizable chunks. He required stiches to close up the gapping wounds. When the police found her, she was covered in blood and wearing nothing below the waist; her underwear were around her ankles leaving the suspicion of foul play perhaps on the victim who was noted as a transient who had recently served time in jail himself. Smith was charged with felony aggravated battery and held in Pinellas County Jail with a $50,000 bail. In her mug shot, she has a menacing expression, which is clearly her portrayal as a vampire.
One company that makes vampire bites that can be placed on your neck is called Tinsley Transfers. Christian Tinsley is an award-winning makeup artist who has a market for vampire bites that can be applied as a makeup or a temporary tattoo, depending on your product selection. You can find the latest in vampire bites online at Amazon from Tinsley Transfers, as well as dozens of other companies, where the prices typically fall below 10 dollars. Add a pair of faux vampire bites as the perfect finishing touch to your Sookie Stackhouse costume. If you are a fan of the Twilight Series, or Vampires Suck, you will have a fun time with your friends as you show that you have got bitten.
Vampire bites is a website for the teen vampire fan. Users of the site can read about vampire books, in particularly the Twilight Series -- Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn -- including updates and links to information regarding the fifth yet-to-released fourth book, Midnight Sun. The site also has a page that briefly mentions the first Twilight Series movie, Twilight; the page has not been updated since March 2009.
There is also a page designated as the fan fiction page. Members can upload their fan fiction that relates to vampires onto the site, as well as comment on fan fiction posted by other members. As the site is a teen-friendly site for vampire fans, the fan fiction has to be rated as PG-13 or Vampire Bites will not allow it to be posted on the site. This is a noted difference from another vampire fan site called Vampire Freaks where posts have no such rule. One thing Vampire Bites does ban is the use of gay characters in portrayal of any of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight characters. Characters of other fan fiction can be altered in their sexual orientation.
Vampire Bites also features a page entirely based on caption contests. A cartoon sketch with a vampire theme is presented and the five best member-submitted captions are listed. Polls are also included on the Vampire Bites website with vampire-related topics. There are 178 members of Vampire Bites as of 2012, and while the website has not been updated since 2009, the most recent post was added November 2011.
Vampires are creatures of the night that feed on blood; they are also sinfully immortal. The mystique of vampire lore is centered around the fear of a vampire feeding on an unwilling victim via a vampire bite in the jugular. According to the lore, following a vampire bite, the victim will become a vampire themselves, thus perpetuating the bloodthirsty way of life. The symbolism of the vampire’s bite, as well as the literal interpretation, is part of the vampire culture. Whether you are talking about pretending to be a vampire for a night, or if you think you really are a vampire, your vampire bite is your signature mark.
