The Malkavian vampire clan was said to have been
sired by an antediluvian known as “Malkav” who was only known in myths
and remnants of this mad clan.
Rumors suggest that Malkav wasn’t even human; he was either an angel or Lilith’s descendant.

Accordingly, Caine attempted to teach his childer how to break free from Creation’s Artificial Barriers and Malkav was the closest to achieving enlightenment. He was portrayed as pushing himself to surpass the limitations of reality and achieve the state of infinite possibilities.
Pushing his limits beyond what is possible, he drove himself mad, losing the ability to filter and interpret the immediate reality that surrounds him. This though brought him very close to seeing the hidden possibilities inherent in the universe.
This resulted for all Malkavians to suffer from an incurable madness, which is inseparable with their clan discipline called “Dementation”.
Other vampires believed that Malkavian's madness is a clan flaw and should therefore be cured but many members of this clan believed that their madness is more of a strength than a weakness.
Another version of Malkav's madness was that it was a result of Caine's curse to all third generation vampires when the second generation vampires died.
Their unique discipline, Dementation, though pointed as their source of madness is a powerful one as it alters the way a victim senses reality. Either driving the victim insane or increasing the Malkav's foretelling (Oracular) abilities.
According to the legends, when Malkav was killed, everyone of his childer lined up at his corpse and drank up his blood, diablerizing him thus creating a The Cobweb or the "Malkavian Madness Network".
The Malkavian Madness Network enables Malkav to whisper to each and every Malkavian soul, it contains each and every Malkavian's thoughts and memories, perhaps thoughts and memories that they are still to have.
Some elders of Sabbat Tzimisce tried to study Dementation themselves for enlightenment of the great ways of the Jyhad should they succeed.
Unfortunately, though most members of the Malkavian vampire clan are willing to mentor anyone willing to embrace their unique power, those who submit themselves for coaching were turned insane and no news of success was yet heard.
Because of this, Malkavians offering to share their unique discipline with other clans are often looked at with contempt and suspicion.
In the formation of the Camarilla sect, six of the Malkavian elders decided to block Dementation and follow a more stable discipline which was Dominate. They concluded that this was the only way for the Malkavian to survive.
These elders called for a gathering of the entire clan through the Malkavian Madness Network, this was known as the Great Prank. When almost all Malkavians were present, they were all changed.
About one-tenth of the Malkavians didn't attend the Great Prank, which resulted the splitting of the clan into two.
Those who attended the Great Prank were the changed Malkavian and were considered the main clan, those who refused changed, remained unchanged and were considered the Antitribus, who later joined the Sabbat.
The division lasted for centuries and not only 'till the Final Nights when the ban of the Dementation was lifted in 1997.
The Dementation surged back into the minds of all members of the Malkavian vampire clan everywhere. This event was called The Awakening, returning all Malkavians to their true nature - the madness.
