Vampire Rave is an online social community that also houses an expansive online database dedicated to vampirism. The members of this vampire social network include everyone from those who believe they are real vampires; who are diehard vampire fans; and for goth-inspired individuals.
The Web site's database includes everything from vampire book reviews to affiliate links where users can purchase vampire furniture. Anything you can imagine that is related to vampires from poetry to postcards is included in the database.
Other categories that are listed are food and drink for vampires; games; costumes; community networking sites; television shows; clubs; and magazines. There are also miscellaneous categories that include more than 2,000 odd items including vampire business cards, vampire skateboard decks, and True Blood headphones. Each category has hundreds to thousands of entries; for example, on Vampire Rave there are more than 2,800 book reviews, 500 vampire articles, and 86 entries pertaining to vampire fangs.
As for member profiles, Vampire Rave includes the member’s name, status, and rank. You can also bite or stalk a member by selecting one of the buttons on the profile. However, you must be of a certain level to bite or stalk others. Members add photos of themselves to Portfolios.
Under the Journal category, members add their own categories, such as poetry or rants, and then post entries as they wish. The more entries they post, as well as the more entries that are read and/or marked as favorite by other members, the higher the posting member’s status climbs. Mentorships are open for members who are interested in learning more about the Vampire Rave rules or about the vampire lifestyle.
All members start with limited access to the Vampire Rave site. In order to move up in the status quo of the society, you have to abide by the status system. When someone signs up for the free vampire social site, they are given a profile and are at a level 1. By spending time on the website and participating in the areas that accessible to you, you build up your status and therefore increase your level. This occurs automatically; you cannot buy your way up the system with money. Each level has a benefit to gain; for instance at level 3 you can bite other members of Vampire Rave, and at level 8 you have permission to stalk Vampire Rave members.
While there is no limit to the levels, if you reach level 100 you become a sire, which is the highest level that comes with great benefits. As a sire, you can mentor up to 20 members; not be forced into a society; leave a society; petition a society to ask for membership; start your own coven; and form an alliance as a coven master.
In order to increase your status, your activity is monitored including what pages you access and the time you spend on the site. You can also receive bonus points, as well as penalties, for other activity. Bonuses are achievable by creating your profile; entering information into the database; and posting in the forums.
You can also gain bonuses by uploading journal entries and having them marked as favorites by other members, as well as by being listed as a friend on other members’ profiles. You can also receive bonuses for your participation in Vampire Rave societies. Join a society and post in the society’s forum, and receive marks by Societies to increase your status. If you are mentored by a dark network mentor, or refer others successfully to the Vampire Rave website, you will gain bonuses. Penalties occur for five different reasons, mostly based on not being active and by befriending a great number more people than have befriended you. Also if you are blocked by members, you incur penalties.
Members of societies can receive any of three marks: the Mark of the Prince, Mark of the Master, and Mark of Shame. Society masters and the Prince, who is the webmaster, are the only members who can mark members of Vampire Rave; only the Prince can give someone a Mark of Shame. The marks of the Prince and of the Master are bonuses, while the Mark of Shame is a penalty. The masters can also make members blind, meaning that they are not able to see what is happening in the forums or the chat rooms. This typically occurs when a member is doing something problematic.
There are two categories of societies: houses, and covens. The core society is the vampire houses, while the covens are smaller groups that can be established by any sire.
The vampire houses include the House of Umbrae Octo, the House of Madadh-Alluidh, the House of La Bella Oscuridad, and the House of Caomhnõir-an-Eolas, as well as House Eternal, the House of Nocturnal Retribution, and the House of Lunazure. Each house has a house master, as well as halls that are operated by rectors, which are members within the house.
There are dozens of covens, which are constantly being added by sires. Some of the vampire covens on Vampire Rave include the Coven of the Curious, the Coven of Complicit Dualities, and the Coven of Fallen Souls of Sorrow. Alliances can be formed between the vampire houses and vampire covens.
Site members are placed in a house or coven without given a choice to which one they choose to join. However, there are requirements before a member can be placed. The member must have reached a level 20, and they cannot already be a member of another house or coven. They can also be traded among societies. Once a member reaches the level of sire, which is level 100, they can leave a society or start their own.
